MOTION CAPTURE TECHNOLOGY IN TURNING THE VIRTUAL INTO REALITY

Motion capture technology has developed greatly over a century, with the effects of technology and techniques developed by humanity. Initially, motion capture was accomplished by artists manually transferring the performances of the actors in front of them on square-by-frame paper. Today, thanks to software using the power of computers, tracking sensors, cameras and processors, a technological level has been reached that is sensitive enough to capture all body movements as an extension of a complex structure. There are different application techniques in motion capture technology. These are succinctly classified as marker-based and non-marker-based motion capture techniques. In addition, marker-based motion capture techniques also have different application techniques; acoustic, mechanical, magnetic and optical systems. Motion capture technology, which was previously used in the military and medical fields and not much information, has gained popularity after being used by the entertainment industry. The technology, which has been used especially in the film industry, has become a technology that is frequently used to give humanoid movements to animation and virtual characters. Motion capture technology plays a key role in films that use CGI-based visual materials and present their presentation without detaching the audience from filmic reality. In this study, primarily the historical process of motion capture technologies is discussed; Detailed literature on rotoscope, motion capture technology and application techniques, which is the first motion capture technique, is presented; Afterwards, the movie 'War for the Planet of the Apes', which is the last of the 'Planet of the Apes' series, was examined in the context of its technical features by using purposive sampling method. With this study, it was aimed to develop a vision for the field experts, as well as the directors, art directors, producers and effects experts, who are practically involved in the film industry, to analyze and develop the processes of motion capture technology in film productions; It is aimed to present an exemplary study for future studies. In this way, it will be possible to present the trajectory of the developments in the field in the historical process.
