The Classification of Takfir and Non-Takfir Sects in al-Ghazali’s Thought: A Study on al-Iqti?ad fi al-I?tiqad
The issue of takfir (excommunication), which stands as one of the most critical turning points in the history of Islamic thought, was situated on a unique methodological foundation in Abu Hamid al-Ghazali’s (d. 505/1111) work, al-Iqtisad fil-I'tiqad. This study aims to examine the boundaries and application conditions of takfir through the ten-stage conceptual analysis and the six-level classification of sects developed by al-Ghazali in the aforementioned work. The article explores how al-Ghazali reconfigured takfir on the basis of the "decisive principle" (asl al-maqtu) against the uncontrolled practices of exclusion, which he characterized as "fanaticism" (taassubat). The author elevated takfir from being a mere theological polemic and defined it as a "legal perspective" (nazar al-fiqhi) that entails severe legal consequences, such as the termination of the inviolability of life and property (ismah). According to the primary findings of the study, al-Ghazali identified "denial" (takzhib—the intentional rejection of the message brought by the Prophet) as the sole legitimate justification for takfir. In this context, he considered intra-Islamic sects such as the Mu'tazilah and Mushabbihah, who fell into errors of interpretation (ta'wil), to remain within the fold of Islam due to their sincere intentions and their avoidance of the excuse of deliberate falsehood (kizhb). Conversely, he regarded the stance of philosophers (falasifa), who undermined the clear intent of the primary texts on issues such as the bodily resurrection and divine knowledge, as "delirium" (hazayan) and a "corrupt excuse," thereby viewing their excommunication as a necessity (wujub). Al-Ghazali’s principle of precaution—stating that "leaving a thousand disbelievers alive is better than the error of shedding the blood of one Muslim"—lies at the heart of his quest for theological balance (iqtisad). Consequently, this study demonstrates that the realm of "theological peace" constructed by al-Ghazali through epistemological precaution and methodological discipline offers essential solutions and a paradigm of "moderation" (iqtisad) against radical exclusionary tendencies in the contemporary Islamic world.
